Veteran Assist Services at Prestige Home Care Agency

VetAssist Program

Our veterans have done so much for our country. They deserve care and attention throughout their lives. Prestige offers that level of care with our Veteran Assist Services. Our VetAssist Program helps vets and their surviving spouses receive assistance benefits from the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA).

We ensure our vets can live their lives with independence and dignity. We also help them apply for the VA Aid & Attendance Pension Benefit.

What are Common Medical Conditions That Affect Today’s Vets?

Veterans often suffer from conditions due to the environments they were exposed to when they were deployed. These conditions affect their quality of life and require additional care. Common conditions include:

AL Amyloidosis: This rare disease occurs when amyloid proteins are abnormally deposited in tissues or organs. It is caused by exposure to herbicides. It is common to vets who served in Korea and Vietnam.

Brucellosis: Brucellosis is a bacterial disease common to Gulf War veterans. It causes muscle pain and profuse sweating. It may become chronic.

Hodgkin’s Disease: Hodgkin’s Disease is a type of lymphatic system cancer. It causes itching, weight loss, swelling of the lymph nodes, fatigue, and weight loss. It is common in veterans who were exposed to herbicides.

Parkinson’s Disease: Parkinson’s Disease is a degenerative brain disorder that causes shaking, stiffness, balance issues, and tremors. It can develop due to herbicide exposure.

Traumatic Brain Injury: TBIs are severe brain injuries caused by direct impact or exposure to explosions. It causes blurred vision, cognitive disorders, and difficulty balancing. It is common in veterans who served in Operations Enduring Freedom, New Dawn, and Iraqi Freedom.

Amputations and Mobility Issues: Many vets incurred injuries that led to amputations and mobility issues that made it difficult for them to care for themselves.

Mental Disorders: Veterans often suffer from mental disorders like depression and PTSD. The symptoms can be so severe that they affect their ability to function.

Prostate Cancer: Prostate cancer is the most common type of men’s cancer. It is often found in vets who were exposed to herbicides when serving in Vietnam or Korea. Symptoms include difficulty urinating, but sometimes there are no symptoms at all.

Respiratory Cancers: Veterans often develop respiratory cancers such as larynx, bronchus, and trachea cancers, due to exposure to dust, chemicals, smoke, and particulates. Asthma and chronic lung disease are also common. These conditions are most likely to occur in vets who served in the Gulf and Afghanistan.
